Euro 2012: Portugal ficou pelas meias-finais

BOA SORTE PORTUGAL!!!

Euro 2012 - four teams on the verge of title

That have been completed on Sunday the quarter-final, I present here a small commentary on the four games of this phase.

Portugal 1 X Czech Republic 0

The quarter-final were opened with the meeting of two teams that had met in the quarter-finals of the European 1996. Also there was only one goal scored, but this time was the Czech Republic to score (which ended in 2nd place in the last moments of glory to the Czech selection, together with the European semi-final in 2004).
As for the game, the 1st part was one of the strangest parts of this European. What about a part where it seemed that lacked passion and emotion on both sides, it seemed that both teams were afraid to approach each other, and where almost were playing just to have a presence? Not to mention the excessive technical errors committed!

Still, the first attempt of a threat to the opponent's goal was made by Czech Republic, by the foot of Petr Jiráček, but without any luck. At 25 minutes, thanks to a pass from Joao Moutinho, Cristiano Ronaldo made the first serious threat on Czech goal well defended by Čech. Even in the 1st part, Cristiano Ronaldo had the best opportunity of this part for Portugal, when finishing off the post after receiving the ball on his chest and have bypassed Michal Kadlec.

Fortunately the 2nd part was better, the point of Portugal score at 78 minutes, thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo, who accomplished the remission who had started in the game against the Netherlands, removing completely any negative criticism that might still persist about the Portuguese player.

In fact, especially for what happened in the 2nd half, Portugal deserved to win, and we agree, by a much greater advantage.
The Czech Republic reacted only to the extent of a threat late in the game, but did not prevent ball possession was mostly Portuguese.
The Czechs went to were filled, but scoring opportunities were very few and insignificant compared with the Portuguese.

In general, it was not a game marked by confusion or large incidents in the field. It was pretty quiet up to a quarter-final.

With this victory, Portugal pushed out of the championship, the only team from Eastern Europe still in the contest. So now one thing is certain: victory will be to an western country ...

Germany 4 X Greece 2

Fernando Santos was perhaps the unluckiest coach in this European, with the goalkeeper and a central hurt, players sent off  and without two important players for the quarter-final.

Despite the favoritism being all on the side of Germany, this game still managed to give a serious warning to other teams: to take the title from Germany will not be easy - Germany is able to show that is here to win everything that appears to forward. Greece gave everything it had, especially in the 2nd parte, but was not sufficient to deal with the psychological game made by Germany, and even taking Mario Gomez, got a surprise and unpredictability effects that disoriented the opponents. The coach has a capacity to create tactics that quickly adapt to any circumstance. In fact, changes made to the German team, although by surprise, proved to be well thought out.

The Germans came into full production, but after several attempts, only on 38 minutes have scored the 1st goal.

The first half was completely dominated by Germany. Only in the 2nd half is that Greece can highlight and tie on 55 minutes. But soon after, and almost to the the end of the game, Germany is back to dominate the game.

Greece still managed to minimize the difference thanks to a free throw, but it quickly became apparent that the fate of the game would be there: without Karagounis, there was no Greek player on the field to rival the German team, with the exception of Katsouranis.
The German offensive football has enormous breadth, which can circumvent any opposition. Although Greece is always defensively throughout the game came a time when it seemed that defended to the despair, the game almost came down to attack from Germany and the defense of Greece.

Fernando Santos tried to reverse after the break, his tactical game, and in fact the team was stronger and more attacking, stretching more in the field, but whose limitations that remained, were seized by Germany.
The defense could have been stronger and was ill-formed, remained far removed from the advanced players, leaving open spaces that were very well used by Germany.

As for the future, Greece will have difficulty in creating a new selection, but this team is with many players at the end of his career.

Of course, this game was impossible not to associate economics and football. Angela Merkel was present in the game, and so far the only political ruler to watch a game in Ukraine: all other heads of state refused to watch a game in Ukraine. Of course it was impossible not to notice that found themselves in the same game, the country accused of causing the austerity, and the country that imposed that across Europe.

Spain 2 X France 0

For the first time in official games, Spain defeated France.

This was one of the games in which one of teams surprises a lot by the negative way. I speak of course of France, which seemed to be on the field with almost no reaction. To do this, no doubt contributed the confusion in the locker room: there was even physical attacks and exchange of insults with the coach. Three players probably holders were off this game.

As the winner, since Brazil in 1970 that the world did not know a selection so victorious as Spain, which showed once again why deserves to profile among the strongest in the world. Add 10 games without losing in the final stages on championships. Of course, this time only one game determines the fate of each selection, and here to the world's better selection can lose.

And admit that as the game unfolded, the victory of Spain was more than assured: the French were without central reference points and appeared disoriented before the Spanish attack. France was no motivation to play. However, France has shown that it is possible to contain the scoring opportunities of Spain, but failed to demonstrate response capabilities offensive: block the offensive ability of Spain and prevent the creation of opportunities to score is the advantage to defeat Spain.
Laurent Blanc made four changes, but it was far from being successful: the team attacked almost exclusively with two players. It was very attached, and provided almost all the game for the Spanish. The excessive fear of Spain and need to replace players on grounds of quarrel, eventually severely limit the game of France, which remained almost defensively, almost apathy and watch the game of the Spanish team.
Of ourse, the excessive replacement eventually affect the identity and way of playing of the French team, which was very detrimental to the performance of the selection.

France has promised much in this competition, but the team is very fragmented in the middle of the championship: the French defenses seemed surprising by the tactics of the Spanish players, because they were apathetic towards the spanish diagonal - is not normal the French team, which is already experienced in these wanderings , being so astonished with the game made by the opponent.
It seems that the motivation that France obtained after the defeat to Sweden, evaporated quickly.

Italy 0 (4) X England 0 (2)

This was so far the only game in this championship which we suffered much beyond 90 minutes. It was so far the only game of Euro 2012 in which the teams finished tied for 90 minutes at zero, and had to solve the game with penalties.
Although these were one of the more balanced games in the quarter-finals, Italy was undoubtedly much more dominant, earning the right to win without the need for overtime and penalties. Italy had far more scoring opportunities than England.
In 1st part, Mario Balotelli was very close to the goal twice, but were caught thanks to the enormous tactical discipline of the English. In fact, throughout the game Italy has made numerous attempts, but were not always well realized: Italy has had serious problems in finalizing the attempts on goal.

In the 2nd part, the first time truly dangerous was on 51 minutes by Italy: it seemed a goal very likely, but it was not thanks to the english goalkeeper, which proved to be a key part to prevent the Italian victory in the 90 minutes . Italy continued to dominate the game, but after the 65/70 minutes Italy was not so forward, the game was becoming predictable, which was seized by England, to change the way they play, but Italy still made several attempts have been hampered by the expertise of John Terry and once again defended by John Hart, who showed why he is known as one of the best English goalkeepers.
It was a game without major incidents, only in the 81 minutes is that the portuguese referee gave the  1st yellow card to Barzagli, and in the 93 minutes another yellow card to Maggio. The shot that followed was one of the most dangerous moments provided by England. This was probably the game of quarter-finals that the favoritism was more balanced between the two teams, but who nonetheless Italy managed to excel in ball possession and goal attempts, which were only caught because of difficulties in finalizing .

In fact, with the game of Sunday Italy was more than deserving of being in the semis and surprised those who had not it as a favorite: the favoritism continues to lean toward the German side, but Italy can continue to surprise.
Italy is generally regarded as a defensive selection, but the replacements showed how much weight can have as a striker. As I said Italy deserved to win in just 90 minutes, did everything for this, as evidenced by the 36 shots it made (which ended without success ...). However, England was very compact in defensive point of view, preventing the superiority of play in Italy came to fruition in goals. England made a game with nothing exceptional, and only became more dynamic with the entry of Carroll. The whole game was focused on Rooney, which resulted in a more depleted team.

The English team had trouble in qualifing, making the team arrived with serious physical problems and lot of wear to the finals of this championship. The defense was far from advanced - lacked energy and was very predictable in their play. A countermeasure often work well. The tactic was organized and accurate, but it was there: failed to create chances. As for the future, also the England team will undergo a renovation of its players, many of whom are reaching the age limit to participate in these competitions.
As for the Italian team, the right side had the potential to win, but the problem of Italy was the central axis. Against Germany, Italy will have to protect more defensively and certainly will not have much ball possession. Italy will continue to bet the same technique that kept the game against England, and that proved to be a good bet.

Spain and Germany follow as favorites, but for what Portugal and Italy have shown, there may be many surprises on Wednesday as much on Thursday. One thing is certain: no one will favor the game to the opponent, and has the capacity to overturn or confirm favoritism.

Euro 2012 - quatro equipas à beira do título

Euro 2012: group B - winners

First of all, I apologize for not having announced the qualifiers for all groups in the correct order, but there was a problem with the message about the winners of Group B.

For this group, one thing is already known from the beginning, one of the favorites to win the championship would be the way. According to statistics, Denmark would have less chance of being successful and in fact ended with two losses.
But after all the team were satisfied by at least left their mark in this championship. After all, the Danish faced very well the German team, with a solid defense that unfortunately, in moments of weakness, Germany took advantage to score twice.
Denmark started the championship to counter expectations by beating the Netherlands, with a goal in the first half on 24 minutes by the foot of Michael Khron-Dehli. Despite being the only goal of the meeting, which was full of attempts, especially by the Dutch team, mainly from Arjen Robben, just after the goal of Denmark had one of the best times to tie the game. In the second part, despite the strong attack by the Dutch team, Denmark has maintained a robust defense that has adapted well to this extremely offensive strategy by the Netherlands.

And fortune would again be against Holland in the next two games, despite having scored, and have started to score in the game against Portugal. In fact, one of the teams considered favorites, had numerous opportunities over the three games that were not used. In the last game after the goal by Rafael van der Vaart, who gave some hope to the Dutch people, the Portuguese team was able to recover from the lethargy that seemed to affect it. Furthermore, the Netherlands seemed to lose all the vigor with which had started the game.
In another game, the chances of Denmark is ascertained were stronger, and in fact the game was much more fierce, even giving to Germany a lot more work than previous ones. The game came to be tied until the 80th minute, a goal by Lars Bender, the result of a pass from Mesut Ozil intended to Mario Gomez, ended with the Danish deram and secured Germany's leadership group.

Despite the no clearance is a bit contrived to Germany, it entered this game like the previous: restless and always looking to attack without leaving room for the opponent. And indeed, despite the goal to tie just five minutes later, thanks to the efforts of Nicklas Bendtner, Christian Eriksen and Drohn-Dehli, Denmark has always been smothered by Germany.
One of the figures who is one of the biggest responsible by all this exceptional journey of the German team is the player Mario Gomez, who scored three goals and was responsible for putting the Netherlands in danger of not passing in the second round of group games. In fact, although both the Netherlands and Denmark trying to adapt to the strong attack from Germany, after seeing what happened in the Portugal game, closing their lines of defense, the truth is that Germany has always been able to show why is considered one of the big favorites to win.

As to other qualified, Portugal, had a fierce passage in which, despite the first game with Germany in it completely dominated the game, in both victories Portugal suffered  a lot and at risk the qualification of Portugal.
However, for Portugal to continue to be successful in this league can not continue to commit elementary errors which sometimes made so far, especially the control of the game that Portugal often almost delivers to the opposing team.

Not to mention some team spirit that has been lacking, although the situation has improved considerably, mainly thanks to the game against Denmark where the alleged poor performance of the captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, finally bring out other players, and show the importance of a united and cohesive team.

BOA SORTE PORTUGAL!!!

Euro 2012: Group D - winners

Despite the bets point to the passage of France and England, both Sweden that was already rejected for the following phases, such as Ukraine that could still dream about the next phase, had a word to say in the final matches of group D. And indeed so it was: the victory of Sweden in their last match pushed France into 2nd place in the group, now having to face Spain, one of the great favorites on this championship.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the key element that allows Sweden to finish with some brilliance, and turns to change the ratings of this group. France, which was first, eventually give way to England, after losing with the last classified of the group that, playing to an audience that mostly supported them, showed that they would not waste good opportunities as they had done previously.
France knew that even losing, would be accurate to the quarter-finals, and if it was just a goal, keeping the leadership of the group and face Italy.
In the first part, the most exciting moment was almost at the end when Benzema and Ribery led an attack which was unfortunately diverted the ball into the side of the opposing goal.

Benzema again had an opportunity early in the second part, which was soon joined another shot from Larsson, but that much more dangerous for the French goal. However, in 54 minutes, Lloris could not take anymore and Ibrahimovic on to hit the half-back to the back of the net after a good cross from Larsson, giving thus the first goal for Sweden.
France responded promptly with the replacement of Hatem Ben Arfa by Florent Malouda and a  dangerous shot by Yann M'Vila. Even with other attempts of the French team, was Sweden taht returned to shoot accurate: after Samuel Holmen hit the barring, in the aftermath, Larsson manages to score the second goal of Sweden.
And the most curious was France have lost the first time in 23 games against a team already eliminated by two defeats. Sweden got a smart strategy, attacking and not forgetting the defense.

As for the other game, resided in Ukraine the hopes that one of the organizers to continue in the league, at least beyond the group stage.
Unfortunately, only a win would guarantee the qualification for the quarter-final, which was soon broken three minutes after the break with a goal from Rooney.

After all, there were many attempts by the Ukrainian side to reverse this result: the shot of Marko Devic was caught by the english defense, Scott Parker, and almost on the quarter of hour, Yevhen Konoplyanka back trying to give hope to the team and the supporters of Ukraine, but whose shot was blocked by John Terry.

England also repeatedly insisted in the first part, but no luck. Also close to half an hour Ukraine back to threaten the english goal by the feet of Andriy Yarmolenko: throughout the game we saw an Ukraine very tense and anxious, which put everything in this game.

However, although the strongest teams from the outset were really, the truth is that both Ukraine and Sweden were teams that managed to create enough danger to favorites: Sweden ended up defeating the great favorite of the group, while Ukraine, even without experience in this kind of championships, managed to dream almost to the end with the qualification.

Euro 2012: group C - winners

Italy and Spain were in a group that was considered of medium difficulty, but where surprises could arise by Croatia, and that happened!
Although everything is open until the last game, was more than expected the passage of Spain, and Ireland was already out of the next phase. Doubts remained between Croatia and Italy: the Croation team was in 2nd place. But yesterday's games could change everything - Croatia played against the potentially stronger team of the group, and Italy played with Ireland, which had lost the other two games and was considered one of the weaker teams present in the league.

If there were as expected, Spain and Italy would win their games and both teams would be cleared, and was in fact what happened.
Let's start with the big loser of the group, Ireland. Despite the disappointment of bid farewell of the Euro 2012 without a single victory, the Irish fans have maintained a positive spirit to the final whistle of the yesterday's game. Even Robbie Keane, advanced from the irish team showed their admiration and satisfaction for all the fair play that kept over the three games, to the point of showing disappointed by the team has not responded to the pride and support shown by fans. Jon Walters, another Irish team advanced, had a similar reaction.
Despite all the support in the stands, in the field, two goals from set pieces, showing a scenario not so optimistic and countered the recent past: since Trapattoni became Irish coach, his team played against Italy three times, tying double and gaining one. As for its opponent, Italy, only breath of relief after the completion of minutes offset from the other game, whether it qualified for the quarter-final.

Italy was required to win, but the other game could really affect the final classification of the group. In the first part with little exciting little is noticeable the effort on the part of Ireland to be able to reverse prior poor performances, is set to 35 minutes the first goal and nearly recahing the 90 minutes the second is marked. After stagnation with two draws, Italy managed to match the favoritism that it had on this group.
Moving on to another game, which also had little exciting in the first part, only in the last minute of the game, is that Croatia would be to know what was its destination in Europe. However, despite the goal by Jesu Navas that knocked the Croatian selection, this farewell to head up because in fact, managed to make their best showing in the tournament, and seriously concerned the teams cleared of the group. It was really by a very little that has not gone: the result against Italy was close to be another, which would grant them the right passage to the quarter-final. After all, managed to leave a good mark, thanks in large part to the great performance of Mario Mandzukic who many non-croats fans will miss in this championship. Despite the non-discharge, Croatia does form a positive balance.
Finally, I speak of Spain, the winner of this group who still saw the chances to lead the group well blurred, and on yesterday's games the shadow that everything could change and end up to not pass for the quarter-final.

Although they fully deserved the victory of yesterday and the leadership of the group, Spain had life more complicated than expected with this group. Only at the very end of the game, thanks to Fabregas and Iniesta, Navas managed a favorable outcome for Spain. Of the two teams ascertained, Spain follows as one favorite.

Euro 2012: group A - winners

The victory of Greece and the Czech Republic in yesterday's games pushed the countries of Eastern Europe, Russia and the great co-hosts Poland, out of the quarter-final.
Interestingly, despite the merits of the Czech team that, despite having started in the worst way, suffering a rout against Russia, turned out to qualify in first place, the great figure of yesterday and the history of the group A is undoubtedly the coach  of the greek selection, the  portuguese Fernando Santos.

Contrary to most predictions, Fernando Santos was able to ward off the giant Russian and the co-hosts Poland. Despite the low chance that fell on Greece, one should not take the merit and experience in both the coach and the team, who managed to work well: the coach was able to convey his way of playing, getting the respect of the team, which was very effective to comply with the objectives of the coach.
And let us not forget that the had a very difficult league start, with injuries and expulsions, which complicated the life  of the hellenic team.

But back to the defeated. In what was considered the least difficult group, where almost everyone had the same chances, Russia was singled out as the big favorite. In fact, began in the best way beating the Czech Republic, showing that was one of the most offensive teams, showing that it had everything to be successful in this championship.
In the game yesterday, Russia has managed to control the game in possession of the ball and shots, while Greece had a more reactive attitude. However, Greece has something that Russia has not had, nor could achieve (at least in the same way): the ability to reinvent itself, regard to the circumstances.

As to Poland, only had the house factor in their favor. He managed two draws, scoring in both games, but found in the final game of the group stage, a Czech Republic completely redone of the poor start and ready to counter this result.
Still, the game of Poland yesterday showed that they knew that only a victory would put they in the quarter-end: from the beginning they showed that they were on the field to play "seriously" - were very proactive and hardworking, but left much to be desired - not able to make decisions in the face of different situations and attitudes of the game.
The limitations of the Polish team, who only know how to play in one way, much favored the Czech Republic: always commanded the game, but only after the news of the victory of Greece is that accelerated the rhythm of play and increased shots on goal.

Surprises aside, though it may be unexpected and Rússsia has shown that it deserved to continue in the competition, nobody can take credit for the Czech Republic and Greece, as should the transition to its good performance.

As statistics have been halted, it is still a mystery know who goes to the semi-finals, as it also depends of course, the adversaries they encounter.

Congratulations and good luck to both teams!
