The non-discharge of Slovenia was one of the great disappointments of the night, mainly due to some favoritism that this music had. |
There was a group of countries that the mere fact of being the countries that were, guaranteed them a place in the final: Serbia, Ukraine and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Then there was another group of countries which, despite having missed a few finals in recent editions, were clearly among the favorites of the public and were also (some more than others) of the satisfaction of the jury: Turkey, Sweden and Norway.
And then came the big surprise: not being the strongest competitor in the Balkan countries, not because they didn't deserved it, but being to represent that country, Slovenia surprised everyone by not having established to the final. It is true that the performance had some tuning and tone problems, but if we are out there, not worth to idicate the problems that more than half of the finalists yesterday as this message does not enough.
Bearing in mind the youth of Eva Boto (the youngest to participate this year), aged 16, was expected to at least the jury had in mind when it parsed the vocal problems of Eva.
If this was the big surprise by not passing on the opposite side, Malta and Lithuania in particular, surprised very much que public, by their passage to the final, especially in the case of Lithuania that the majority of bets not have it as a finalist.
In the specific case of Malta, as I said in a previous message, was the remarkable effort that the country put on a song that did not bring anything new to the music scene, but it was well crafted both as the official music video live version. All this enormous effort has good fruit, to secure a place in Malta in the final.
The case of Lithuania, the singer actually has charisma and personality on stage, which could be further enhanced with a better song.
In the case of other establishments, both Serbia but rather Bosnia were favored by country name. Zeljko Joksimovic is well liked among eurofãs and even bringing something similar to what he took to Istanbul in 2004, moreover, in my opinion had a very inferior quality, was certainly very much voted by the public and juries. The same goes for Bosnia, which is always of the top rated countries in the Balkans.
As for Ukraine, not having here the threat of Russia, was punctuated by highly-Eastern countries and many Western countries where it has strong diaspora (especially in Portugal). And all the music and interpreting Gaitana and other elements on stage burst of energy and color from start to finish: it was a typical Ukrainian-style music.
In the case of the Nordic countries, we were facing two of the favorites to win (Loreen and Tooji), and the passage was more than assured. I confess that in the case of Loreen, its huge hoarseness prevented her from showing its full potential and the potential of music. And her performance was where the cameras were worse. However, the bias remains with Loreen. Although, will face two big threats: Serbia and Russia, in addition to strong competition from some of those who were automatically in the final.
As for Tooji, performance was within what we expected: it was one of the great moments of the night, despite the failures of tune that did not happen during the rehearsals.
In relation to the other finalists Estonia has certainly been much favored by the judges, but I recognize that the pitch was very good. As for Macedonia did not ceased to be a surprise, but like Nina Badrić, Kaliopi was a singer with a relatively long career, and the music presented was certainly an added value in the middle of so many ballads. Finally, the good disposition of Can Bonomo and all the theatricality of his interpretation ensured him a place in the final. As for the final, I do not know if will be able to stay in TOP5 as of the last times that was in the the final, but one thing is certain: points will rained both East and West to Turkey. On top of that with the absence of Armenia and Georgia not to passing, Turkey will leave most favored.
Analyzing the other competitors, highlight Slovakia, being a song directed to a restricted group of audience that does not follow a lot Eurovision, had a very good performance. Unfortunately, being Slovakia, was far from obtaining the same lucky as Eldrine by Georgia last year. In the case of Belarus as I said, the changes in the original music, and the supposed anger with fans (not sure why) threw away the chance of passing that already were not many.
The Netherlands, brought a very unique and simple song but that was expected to stay for the semifinal, not being the Netherlands another case of a country without a vote of the neighborhood.
The performance of Bulgaria excessively minimalistic, took too many qualities to the music, that not all pyrotechnics towards the end managed to save.
Croatia was one of the countries that had some chance of passing, especially by ther performer, Nina Badrić, who was one of the most awarded performers in this semifinal. However, despite not having anything serious to point out, the existence of too many neighbors to compete with it, eventually dictate what is beginning to be common in Croatia: not to pass the final.
The parody of Georgia could be a surprise due to the political vote, since the part of juries would be heavily penalized. After all, the blocks in this semifinal could drive from final both good and bad musics.
As for Portugal, I have nothing negative to point to the voice quality of Filipa, nor their correct interpretation. But the compliments stop there. Nothing else worked fine. Especially the chorus after the first 30 seconds it seemed that was not there to do anything: indeed it seemed that neither knew what it was doing there. Also the background image too static pulled out all the good taste of music.
I confess that, when there were yet to announced a finalist and Turkey had not yet been announced, I realized the fate of the remaining competitors. But when I saw that also lacked Slovenia did not want to believe what was happening.
