Eurovisão: a caminho de Baku 2012! (XVIII)

Vou falar agora dos dois países que na edição deste ano, mantiveram os seus artistas mas, depois de divulgada a música a concurso, alteraram-na ou por motivos internos (no caso da Itália) ou por motivos de violação das regras da Eurovisão (São Marino).

Itália e Nina Zilli 
Após a última participação em 1997, a Itália regressa o ano passado, surpreendendo muita gente ao terminar em 2º lugar (graças aos júris que colocaram a música "Madness of Love" em 1º lugar, enquanto que o televoto apenas lhe atribuiu o 11º lugar).
O país que mais votos atribuiu à Itália desde 1975 é Portugal. Desde a sua estreia em 1956 que a Itália ganhou duas vezes e ficou apenas uma vez em último lugar. A música mais conhecida, e que acabou por ter muita fama para além do festival foi o tema "Volare" ou "Nel blu dipinto di blu" que ficou em 3º lugar em 1958 e foi interpretado por Domenico Modugno.

A escolha deste ano foi feita com base no "Sanremo Music Festival", um festival que se realiza anualmente na cidade de Sanremo, criado em 1951 e que por isso é considerado o antecessor do festival da Eurovisão.
A emissora RAI (responsável pela transmissão da Eurovisão) encarregou-se de escolher de entre os participantes do Festival, o representante de Itália: este poderia ser ou não o vencedor do Festival.

A escolha recaiu sobre a cantora de 32 anos, Nina Zilli que participou com a música "Per Sempre", que até 16 de Março foi tida como a música que iria representar Itália. No entanto nesse dia foi feita uma alteração e a escolha passou a recair sobre "L'Amore è Femmina".
Não havendo concorrência para eu analisar, visto que o festival não tinha por objectivo escolher o representante de Itália, vou apenas me concentrar no representante e na música.

É indiscutível a qualidade vocal e artística de Nina Zilli. E quanto à música, apesar de ter um estilo semelhante à do ano passado, esta é de longe muito mais agradável de ouvir e muito mais enérgica. Facilmente se fica com a música no ouvido e se quer ouvir mais vezes. Sendo única do género na edição deste ano, poderá ter muito a ganhar com isso.

Não posso dizer que vá novamente um 2º lugar, mas é muito provável que a Itália volte a ter uma boa classificação.

Pertencendo ao "Big Five", o problema da passagem à final está fora de questão. Na final, espera-se que receba bastantes pontos sobretudo dos países ocidentais, como Portugal, Espanha, Suíça, França e Finlândia.

São Marino e Valentina Monetta 
Passo agora a falar da pequena república inserida na península da Itália. Esta é a 3ª participação de São Marino. Até agora nunca passou à final e, no ano de estreia, 2008, no último lugar na semifinal.
A escolha deste ano é mais um dos casos que me deixa sem palavras. A escolha deste ano foi muito atribulada: em primeiro lugar, foi adiado o prazo de anúncio tanto da artista como da música, que estava a cargo da emissora nacional San Marino RTV. Até que finalmente foi anunciado a 14 de Março que a cantora de 37 anos (sim é verdade: ela no vídeo passa por uma miúda de 16 anos... ou pelo menos tenta passar), Valentina Monetta iria representar esta república na Eurovisão. Dois dias depois, a emissora anunciou que Valentina iria interpretar o tema "Facebook Uh, Oh, Oh,". No entanto, a EBU acabaria por rejeitar a escolha de São Marino por violar uma das regras do concurso ao incluir explicitamente marcas comerciais na música.

Sendo a rejeição feita já quase no final do prazo de submissão das candidaturas nacionais, a EBU decidiu excepcionalmente prolongar o prazo para São Marino submeter outra música até 22 de Março. E eis que, mesmo nesse dia é apresentado pela emissora o vídeoclip oficial da nova música que São Marino levará à Eurovisão, intitulada "The Social Network Uh, Oh, Oh".

E é aqui que eu fiquei algum tempo sem palavras.

Para além desta mudança tão... subtil, o vídeo e tudo o resto manteve-se praticamente inalterado.
Não havendo uma apresentação oficial ao vivo não posso comentar as qualidades vocais da cantora, mas pelo menos pelo videoclip não me parecem das melhores da Eurovisão.
E confesso que estou expectante para ver a interpretação ao vivo de uma música com este tema. Até agora parece que não caiu nas boas graças dos eurofãs.
De facto a música é bem cómica mas ao ponto de cair no ridículo. E tanto a artista como todo o vídeo estão projectados de uma maneira infantil e um pouco irritante.

Não me parece que os júris internacionais se engracem muito com esta música. Uma possível passagem dependeria mais do televoto que, até agora, não parece estar muito para aí virado.

Dos poucos países que até agora deram (poucos) pontos a São Marino, votarão na mesma semifinal que este país, a Albânia, o Azerbaijão e a Grécia.
Esta é a segunda vez que tanto Itália como São Marino participam no concurso, mas o ano passado a Itália não pôde votar em São Marino visto ele ter participado numa semifinal diferente daquela onde a Itália votou. Como este ano a Itália terá a oportunidade de votar na mesma semifinal em que está São Marino, é provável que atribua também bastantes votos a São Marino.


Querendo ser optimista e justo para todos os países, Boa sorte para ambos os países!!!

Without further delay, here are my comments on two more choices.

F. Y. R. Macedonia and Kaliopi 


Ever since late 2011 which had been announced that the artist Kaliopi, 45 years, would represent Macedonia in Eurovision this year, but only at the end of last month is held the official presentation of the Music "Crno i Belo", since the choice was performed using internal selection.


In the absence of competition I'll just focus on music and artist. Kaliopi has been chosen in 1996 to represent Macedonia in Eurovision, but was up for pre-qualification round.
She a good vocal apparatus and succeeded in presenting a good interpretation of the song. Both she and the band that accompanied her has a very unique style and original, which may appeal to the public by the difference.


As for music, shows several changes of rhythm and melody that does not get too bad.
I think it is a good choice for this Balkan country, which will have almost all its neighbors in the same semifinal that it.
This year, Macedonia has with him to vote in the same semifinalwhere she participates in almost all countries that have given it more points since the introduction of the semi-finals: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Turkey and Serbia.


Maybe this is that Macedonia is again present in the final. The last time was in 2007, although in 2008 and 2009 have been in 10th place in their respective semifinals in which it acted and so presumably would go to the final. However, as in both cases Macedonia did not obtain a minimum of 70 points, a jury selected purposely for the occasion, intervened and choose who would go to the final: either the 10th or any other. In both cases the jury preferred to choose another country that was not among the top 10 (in 2008 was Sweden and Finland in 2009). At that time Macedonia considered seriously give up from Eurovision.
After all it seems more pleasing to the public and juries, it is necessary not only be lucky to be among the top 10 and have a minimum of 70 points (which is not always easy).

Bulgaria and Sofi Marinova 


I think so far the music presented in the contest with more languages ​​included was the music that Portugal led in 2007, "Dança Comigo" performed by Sabrina: this song contains a sentence in each if these languages - Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.


But that is nothing compared with the languages ​​included in the music chosen by Bulgaria. Apart from Bulgarian which is the dominant language in music, it also features phrases, nothing less than another 10 languages​​. Yes, the languages ​​are: Arabic, Azeri, English, French, Greek, Italian, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish and Turkish. To sing and understand this song  we almost need a GPS to avoid getting lost in the midst of so many languages​​, and there are very different languages ​​with very different linguistic roots.
At one point, almost everything ends up looking the same, especially for those who do not speak (or at least not dominate) none of these languages​​.


The history of Bulgaria hasn't been marked by many successes: since its debut in 2005, only in 2007 that made ​​it through to the final, and raise an honorable 5th place.
However, it has twice been close to passing to final: in 2008 was ranked in 11th place, and last year won a surprising 12th place when it was one of the songs that best bet to pass the final and get a good ranking.


The performer of this year is the 26 year old singer Sofi Marinovathat gives voice to the song "Love Unlimited": really love has no limits, not even of language.
However, after the qualification for final on 4th January, she finished tied with the same number of votes as the 2nd ranked, the song "Chance for better life" as performed by the group New 5 that inexplicably took 1st place by the jury. In televoting got 8 points. In the case of Sofi was the opposite (8 votes of the jury and thetelevoting 12). Prevailing rule of dominance of the public vote, the victory was handed to Sofi Marinova.
It really was by far the best choice possible. Both the 2nd ranked as the 3rd, the singer Dess  with the song "Love Is Alive", did not have so many qualities as the winning song. Indeed, perhaps the music of Dess was an alternative of weight (hence the 2nd place intelevoting), but never  New 5: music and rhythm were pleasant, but the voice quality was undoubtedly the lowest in the festival.


Returning to the winning song and not being a genre that I like very much, I must admit that the singer has a voice reasonably good and was competent in her performance.
It is difficult to say that will appeal more to the public or to juries, but I think perhaps more to the televoting.
Of the countries that tend to give more votes to Bulgaria, who will vote this year in the same semi-final where she will participate (also will be the 2nd semifinal) are Macedonia, Turkey, France and Slovenia.

Eurovisão: a caminho de Baku 2012! (XVII)

Aqui estão os comentários a mais dois países.

Bósnia-Herzegovina e Maya Sar 
Volto agora aos Balcãs para falar de um dos países mais bem sucedidos, apesar de nunca ter ganho. Nunca falhou uma final, o que comprova o facto da Bósnia ser mais um dos países muito beneficiados com o voto político: a única razão que explica os lugares demasiado bons que alcançou, quando levou músicas muito más.


A intérprete deste ano, já esteve presente em edições antigas da Eurovisão, 2004 e 2011, fazendo voz de coro, e em 2011 tocando também piano.
Estou a falar da cantora de 30 anos, Maya Sar, que interpretará uma poderosa balada intitulada "Korake Ti Znam". Como a escolha foi feita por selecção interna a cargo da emissora bósnia BHRT, não há concorrência que eu possa analisar nem comprar com a vencedora. Não havendo também nenhuma apresentação ao vivo oficial da música, apenas me posso guiar pela versão studio do vídeoclip oficial.
E por aí vemos que estamos perante uma balada muito emotiva com uma mensagem bem tocante e profunda.
Apesar de não ser cantada em inglês, esta música consegue transmitir uma mensagem e não deixa o público completamente indiferente.


Como a Bósnia tem consigo na mesma semifinal grande parte dos seus vizinhos dos balcãs, e como costuma ser sempre altamente pontuada por eles, a passagem à final está praticamente garantida.
Para além dos vizinhos dos balcãs, a Bósnia também deverá receber bastantes pontos na semifinal, da Turquia (provavelmente 12 pontos), Suécia, Noruega e Holanda.

Croácia e Nina Badric 
Passo agora para um dos vizinhos, que não tem sido tão bem sucedido como a Bósnia. Desde a sua estreia em 1993, a Croácia já esteve 5 vezes no TOP10, sendo a última vez no entanto, em 2000. E já falhou por 3 vezes a passagem à final.
Este ano a Croácia aposta na grande voz da cantora de 39 anos, Nina Badrić, que nos traz uma balada também cheia de emoção intitulada "Nebo". A exemplo da Bósnia, também a selecção foi interna, a cargo da emissora HRT.
Estando perante uma cantora já com uma carreira consistente, espera-se da Croácia uma participação e uma interpretação fortes. É possível que a Croácia inverta a tendência dos dois últimos anos e volte a estar presente na final.


Mas com a Croácia poderá passar-se o mesmo problema que a Bósnia: uma música com uma mensagem tão rica, se não for bem interpretada na Eurovisão e se não tiver em palco os elementos essenciais para conseguir transmitir adequadamente a mensagem e a emotividade, as performances perderão muito com isso.


Para além dos países dos balcãs, a Croácia deverá receber na semifinal, votos da Ucrânia e da Alemanha.
No entanto, mesmo que se qualifique para a final não deverá obter uma classificação muito elevada.

Eurovisão: a caminho de Baku 2012! (XVI)

Vou agora falar de dois países vizinhos, tanto geograficamente como a nível de votos. Esta tendência de voto entre ambos os países já está muito próxima da tendência de voto entre a Grécia e o Chipre.

Roménia e Mandinga 
Começo por falar do país que, dos dois está há mais tempo na Eurovisão. A participação da Roménia no incício não foi muito afortunada, nem muito regular. Desde a entrada em 1993, voltou a participar em 1998, 2000 e a partir de 2002 tem participado todos os anos. Até 2004, só há a destacar um 9º lugar em 2002 e um 10º em 2003. Apesar de em 2005 também ter ficado em 3º lugar, e ter alcançado o 1º lugar na semifinal, para mim a melhor participação da Roménia foi em 2010, onde também alcançou o 3º lugar.
Este ano, este país do Leste Europeu traz-nos uma música muito animada: de facto, toda a prestação na selecção nacional, rebentou de ritmo e energia do princípio ao fim. Além da cantora, todos os outros elementos da banda,com os instrumentos e a sua própria interpretação, constituem uma mais-valia que enriquecem muito toda a interpretação.


Quanto aos adversários, apesar de ter ficado em 2º lugar, não acredito que a banda Electric Fence fosse uma boa alternativa. Já o 3º classificado, o cantor Cătălin Josan, com a música "Call my name" poderia ser uma boa alternativa, apesar de ser um género muito diferente da música vencedora.


Apesar de não ter nada de muito mau a apontar às qualidades vocais da cantora, penso que esta será uma música que irá agradar muito mais ao televoto do que aos júris. De facto, se a interpretação na Eurovisão for pelo menos igual à da selecção nacional, esta música vai ficar facilmente na memória do público na hora de votar.
Dos países que mais pontos costumam dar à Roménia, votarão na mesma semifinal que ela,a Moldávia, a Espanha (o mais provável será este dois países darem os 12 pontos à Roménia), Israel, Chipre e Rússia.

Moldávia e Pasha Parnefi 
Passo agora para o vizinho do lado, que se estreou muito mais tarde, só em 2005, logo com um 6º lugar e à excepção de 2008, nunca falhou uma final. Para além do ano de estreia, voltou a estar no TOP 10 (precisamente no 10º lugar) em 2007.
Portugal é neste momento o 2º país que mais pontos deu à Moldávia.
A exemplo da Roménia, também a Moldávia nos traz este ano uma música cheia de ritmo, onde é bem visível a mistura entre os ritmos tradicionais e modernos.
Com o título "Lăutar", esta música possui também uma mensagem positiva e bem descontraída. Talvez fosse melhor mudar os bailarinos em palco, a roupa e um pouco a coreografia, pois no meu entender são os pontos fracos desta música.
No entanto, não foi a música vencedora por parte do público, que preferiu a 2ª classificada, a cantora Cristina Croitoru com a música "Fight for Love". Não obstante as qualidades vocais da cantora (que também não percebo porque só obteve 4 pontos da parte do júri), a música vencedora foi de facto a melhor escolha, pois na hora de votar ficará mais facilmente na memória do público.


A final nacional da Moldávia ficou este ano também marcada pelo regresso de Geta Burlacu, de 37 anos, que representou o país em 2008, sendo até agora a única vez que o país não foi à final. Talvez por isso tenha ficado entre as músicas que não recebeu nenhum ponto do público, recebendo apenas 7 pontos do júri.


Para além da Roménia, este ano na semifinal, de entre os países que costumam dar mais pontos à Moldávia, estará apenas a Rússia. Mas sendo a Moldávia um país com uma diáspora significativa em vários países europeus, e sendo esta música que até agrada ao público, poderão ser vários os países tanto de leste como do Ocidente que poderão dar votos à Moldávia.

You may have noticed that I'm not following the chronological order which is announced the choices of each country to the Eurovision, but rather an order that begins with the choices i consider easier to write a review.

Here are my comments for more two countries.

Sweden and Loreen

This is by far the choice that gives me more pleasure to comment. Again the swedish choice was made by the Melodifestivalen, and to me there wasn't a festival with so quality by many years. 

All the songs would be great choices for Eurovision because they are well above the average of the choices made ​​by other countries.

One of the highlights of this edition was the return of the winner of Melodifestivalen in 1999 and 2008 and also the winner of the Eurovision in 1999, Charlotte Perrelli. This year brought the song "The Girl". It was evident the effort and investment of the singer in music and performance. Unfortunately it was not enough to have gone even to the "Second Chance," ending up only in 5th place in the 4th semifinal.

After all, the victory of Loreen could not be more just. We are facing a very intense song, both in rhythm and in melody, lyrics, message and particularly interpretation. It's amazing the ability of the singer of Moroccan-Berber descent, 28 years old, have to move much throughout the song and still maintain an almost perfect tuning, to the point of the live version is much better than the studio version. A song and an interpretation so powerful could only earn the victory. In fact, everything was thought to detail, from the choreography,  and set of lights at the point of being able to convey a single emotion for those who are watching.

As for competition, in addition to the 2 ranked, Danny Saucedo with the song "Amazing," which for me was not their best performance in Melodifestivalen (the last year was much better), I emphasize the 3rd and 7th ranked.

In third place was the singer Ulrik Munther, with only 18 years old, with the song "Soldiers". It is a very nice song to listen to, and the whole interpretation was also unique .In 7th place was the Hevy Metal band, Dead by April, with the song "Mystery". A different style of others who I have already mentioned, but got a strong presence on stage with a performance obviously more "heavy", but still catchy.

Eurovision is marked by unpleasant choices and surprises throughout its history.

 this year commit the musical crime of not putting this music among the finalists, and give it at least 3rd place in the final. Although up to 2nd place would be very little to Loreen  "Euphoria".

Russia and Buranovskiye Babushki 

I am standing before another choice, that it's very difficult for me to give a comment. Obviously not here concerned the age or the costumes worn by this "ethnic-pop" music group. Rather, it is to praise the courage to participate and to show not only the traditional culture of Russia, but also alert to the fact that Eurovision should not be guided by youth and beauty of the artistswhen it should first give more importance to the vocal qualities of the artists and interpretation.

And unfortunately, the vocal qualities of the group leave much to be desired. Obviously we have to take into account the age and probably the weak musical knowledge of any of the singers.

However, Eurovision is above all a musical competition. And it should always be the differentiating factor of the music in contest.

Admittedly most of the songs in the competition were not great alternatives. Even the runners up, Yulia Volkova and Dima Bilan, the latter brought the second place to Russia in 2006 and victory in 2008. At best, the 3rd place, Timati & Aida Garifullina could provide a good alternative to the winning song.

But the most likely scenario is the passage from Russia to final, as it's happened since exist semifinals, were it not for the fact that the countries of eastern europe and western countries too, where there is some Diaspora, always give points to Russia. In the same semifinal that Russia will be a number of countries that may  points to Russia: Latvia, Finland, Romania, Hungary, Moldova and Israel.

This song reminds me of the choice of Russia in 2010 that despite the poor quality, able to pass the final and reached the 11th place. It seems to me that Russia wants to prove every year that they do not need to take a good quality music to pass to final. It becomes an offense to those countries that put more effort in music but can not exercise the political voting power  as Russia exercises.

Continuing with the comments of the choices for the Eurovision, here are for two more countries.

Turkey and Can Bonomo 

Turkey's participation in Eurovision is a very special case. He debuted in 1975 being in last place, as in 1983 and 1987. The luck has completely reversed itself in 1997 when it reached the 3rd place, due not only to bet on the traditional Turks rhythms often mixed with a touch of modernity, or in rock bands, as well as much due to the strong Turkish diaspora by Europe, which allowed the country from the introduction of televoting, always managed to reach several times not only TOP10 as the TOP5. Since the entry of Turkey, the countries that gave more points are all in Western Europe: The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and the record holders in the allocation of points to Turkey, France and Germany (since 2004 the only year in which France did not give the 12 points in the final beyond the year in which Turkey was not present, it was only in 2008, and Germany itself has repeatedly which also gave him the 12 points or 8 or 10 points).

All this wave of success ended abruptly last year when Turkey for the first time since there are semifinals in the competition failed to pass the final, after the previous year have been awarded the 2nd place.

As expected, international juries were not attributed to the Turkish performance enough points to put it in the top 10, because from the televoting, diaspora was once again able to put Turkey among the10 highest scores. This could have been very beneficial for Turkey, not only to realize that the vote of the diaspora and the choice of traditional rhythms that also appeal to the public other than immigrant from Turkey are not sufficient to obtain good results, but also to the fact Turkey has to start to diversify their bets and invest in other musical aspects. In recent years the stakes in Turkey have been with very monotonous level of diversity of styles, or songs that combine traditional music with a touch of modernity, or the typical rock band. But always in the same tone, without major changes.

Perhaps this is why the bet this year was different. Turkey turned the focus on traditional music, with a strong presence of Easternrhythms, and with a touch of modernity. But this year, the music is indeed much more original. The interpreter, Can Bonomo, a 24 year old Turkish singer, will sing the theme "Love Me Back".

Both the representative and the music were selected internally by theTurkish broadcaster that broadcasts Eurovision in the country.

This is a bet that most likely will bring Turkey back to final and with a good classification. As the selection was internal, there are no other competitors that I can compare. And the presentation of the music does not correspond at all to act in final, if only because they are on stage more than the six elements that the rules define as the limit.

However, I am sure that Turkey will bring us a great show as it has been customary in recent years, before the poor performance last year.

The Netherlands and Joan Franka 

Now for an opposite case to that of Turkey: since there semifinals, the Netherlands has only been present in the final the first time in 2004. From there, the nearest place was the 13th place in 2008, finishing last year to have reached the last place (which has not reached since 1968!!) in the semifinals. The last time he was in the Top 10 (8th place) was in the distant year of 1999.

This year this Western European country also brings us a song quite different from the ordinary. It's called "You and Me" and is played by Joan Franka, a singer with 21 years old with Turkish and Dutch nationality, that was presented in an Indian style.

The music can have the advantage of originality, both musically and image. However, the vocal qualities during the festival selection leaves much to be desired. And it seems that the jury was  the same opinion.

The selection of the representative of the Netherlands was comprised of two parts.

At first, there were three duels in which two songs competed to pass the final stage. Then, among the three winners of the duels, the winner would come out. During the duel, the winning song won both 1st place in the jury and the televoting, compared to its rival (the singer Raffaela Paton with the theme "Chocolatte"), but in the final competition obtained (by far) the lowest score by the jury. The significant victory by the televoting is that allowed the singer to obtain the first place.

Although the jury had voted more in the 3rd ranked (already in duels received more votes from the jury), the singer Ivan Peroti who played"Take the I am," I preferred the 2nd place, the singer Pearl Jozefzoon with the song "We Can Overcome". It certainly is a very common style of music and does not usually have much success in the contest. However, that would certainly appeal more to the international juries.

I think what is lacking in winning song is the existence of the highlights in music: it is too dull, and always in the same intonation.As for the lyrics and once again I say, originality, it was well done.

Of the countries that gave more points to the Netherlands since the introduction of the semifinals, will vote in the same semifinal in whichit participates, Malta, Norway and Turkey, which unfortunately are not among the five countries that have more votes to the Netherlands.
